Renovations and Additions

The Reading Citadel is a new intermediate high school for the Reading School District. An existing private hospital, (Saint Joseph’s) was converted to a public school. To meet school district needs, 154,000 square feet of additions were required. The five-story addition utilizes structural steel framing to support composite beam floors, bar joist roof, and diagonally-braced lateral load system. The steel framing also supports two original masonry walls built in the 1880’s. These walls are visible from Walnut Street and the 12th Street. The chapel of the original building was also preserved and reconfigured to usable space. To preserve the 3-story high walls and reuse them, they needed support for the phase between demolition and new construction. We designed steel towers to support the walls to allow the demolition to take place.
